Community Outreach & Social Impact Initiatives
PLANETIIUM actively manages and delivers a wide range of outreach and community engagement initiatives for the local community, in line with its mission to promote environmental sustainability and societal well-being.
The institute implements programmes that encompass education, health awareness, information dissemination, and community-based learning activities. These include environmental education campaigns, sustainability workshops, public lectures, and awareness programmes focusing on issues such as climate change, pollution, food security, and healthy living.
A key highlight is the organisation of the Planetary Health Festival 2026, which is open to the public and serves as a platform to engage the wider community, including participants from Kuantan and surrounding areas. The festival features a variety of activities such as health screening, blood donation campaigns, educational exhibitions, and interactive sustainability programmes.
The IIUM Planetary Health Festival 2025 is a premier two-day event held in celebration of the 3rd Anniversary of the Institute of Planetary Survival for Sustainable Well-being (PLANETIIUM). In collaboration with the Dar al-Hikmah Library (Kuantan Campus) and sponsored by IKOP Pharma, this festival serves as a vital platform for community outreach, knowledge exchange, and environmental advocacy.

Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Venue: Institute of Planetary Survival for Sustainable Well-being (PLANETIIUM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

The festival aims to bridge the gap between academic expertise and public awareness by promoting the “Planetary Health” concept—recognizing that human health is inextricably linked to the health of the Earth’s natural systems.
The festival features a diverse range of activities designed for all age groups, categorized into four pillars:
Workshops & Hands-on: Practical sessions including Organic Liquid Fertilizer (OLF) production, laboratory tours, and an interactive Climate Action Wall.
Educational & Awareness: Insightful Planetary Health talks, an international webinar series on Biodiversity, and a community book giveaway.
Exhibitions & Health Services: Free health screenings, blood donation drives, and specialized booths from the Breast Centre, Hearing Clinic, and various NGOs.
Competitions: Engaging activities such as the “Trash to Treasure” challenge, Planetary Health quizzes, and videography/coloring contests to inspire creative sustainability.
There are Car Boot Sales (CBS) Thrift Market organised by PLANETIIUM every two months, selling secondhand or preloved items collected from the IIUM community. This initiative encourages the circular economy and recycling practices while fostering strong collaboration between the institute and the local community.
In addition, PLANETIIUM contributes to community health and well-being through initiatives related to environmental health, toxicology awareness, and preventive healthcare education. Educare Planetary Health Learning Programme (EARTHLING) @ PLANETIIUM is a platform designed to empower the community through planetary health education, from kindergarten to university level. The institute also supports knowledge-sharing platforms, including seminars, webinar, short courses, and informational services aimed at enhancing public understanding of sustainability-related issues.
Importantly, PLANETIIUM is actively involved in environmental conservation initiatives, including beach cleaning activities and participation in the Pantai Angkat programme, which promotes coastal stewardship and long-term care of adopted beach areas. These initiatives foster environmental responsibility among students, staff, and local communities while contributing directly to the preservation of marine ecosystems.
Furthermore, PLANETIIUM engages in direct community involvement through collaborative projects, student-led outreach programmes, and partnerships with local stakeholders. Activities such as tutorials, training sessions, and volunteer-based programmes provide opportunities for students and researchers to apply their knowledge while benefiting the community. Through the Sustainable Technology and Innovation for Food Security (SUSTAIN) research centre, we have contributed a Vertical Aquafarming System (VAS) to underprivileged communities, empowering them to produce their own food and generate income.
These outreach efforts reflect PLANETIIUM’s role as a knowledge hub that bridges academia and society, ensuring that research outcomes are translated into meaningful, real-world impact for the local community.
